The Oaks was the residents of Booker T. Washington, the founder of Tuskegee University (formally Tuskegee Institute) and was designed by African American Architect, Robert R. Taylor. The home was built by Tuskegee students and Washington paid for the construction with his own funds. Washington died here on November 14, 1915.
